The twenty-second season of the Unisport League at the University of Rijeka is entering its final phase, bringing an exciting battle for the title and reaffirming the important role of sport in student life. After months of competition and as many as 17 completed sports, the 2025/2026 season finale promises uncertainty until the very end.

In the men’s category, a tight race for first place is unfolding between the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Engineering, while in the overall standings the Faculty of Medicine currently holds a convincing lead. However, the real drama is taking place in the middle of the table, where the differences between teams are minimal and each new competition can significantly alter the rankings.

One of the participants viewing this season with particular pride is Filip Maglić, a student at FIDIT. His association, established only this academic year, had to prove itself not only on the field but also off it.

“Considering that we were only formed this academic year as an association of former departments and that it was necessary to connect people I had not known before, I would say this season was more mentally than physically demanding. There were many obstacles we had to overcome as an association, but I believe we all came out of this season wiser than we were at the beginning,” said Maglić, adding that the results achieved were expected given that they compete against faculties with significantly larger student populations.

He particularly highlighted the success of the futsal team: “I am aware that not everyone participates in sports, but those who do make a big difference. I would especially like to praise our futsal team, which reunited after many years and won second place in the league, and that is probably my favorite achievement this year. In other sports, we consistently won medals, except in basketball, in which I also compete, but we made up for it with two medals in 3×3 basketball.”

Attention is already turning toward the next season. “We hope to be even stronger. We are also preparing activities beyond sports. We plan to organize a joint freshman party for the former departments at Crkva, try to secure a hall for team sports, organize a social gathering with a card tournament, and acquire new jerseys,” Maglić concluded.

The Unisport League is one of the most important sports programs for students at the University of Rijeka. For more than two decades, it has brought together students from all faculties through a competition system that runs throughout the academic year. Students compete in numerous team and individual sports, from football and basketball to athletics, swimming, and chess.

What makes the league unique is its openness to all students, regardless of their level of athletic ability. The goal is not only top results, but also to encourage an active lifestyle, develop healthy habits, and strengthen the sense of community among students.

This season stands out with record numbers, both in terms of sports and participants. The strong student interest further confirms the importance of the Unisport League as a platform that combines competition, recreation, and social life.

As the season approaches its conclusion, an exciting finish is clearly ahead. Whether the Faculty of Medicine will maintain its leading position or the Faculty of Engineering will turn the tide will be decided soon in the remaining two sports, tennis and beach volleyball.
