As part of the 27th Fiumanka programme, the first day of competition of the Students’ Fiumanka was held yesterday — a unique university sailing regatta that, for the fifth consecutive year, brings students and staff from the University of Rijeka components to the sea in the same crews.

On the regatta course in the Port of Rijeka, five qualifying races were sailed in which teams from various faculties and university units competed for the best possible placement ahead of today’s final races.

The first race was won by the Faculty of Economics team, ahead of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Law. In the second race, the Faculty of Maritime Studies was the fastest, followed by the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Teacher Education. The third race saw victory for the Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management, ahead of the Faculty of Mathematics and the University of Rijeka team. In the fourth race, the Faculty of Teacher Education took first place, the University of Rijeka team came second, and the Faculty of Maritime Studies third. The final race of the day was won by the Faculty of Engineering, ahead of the Faculty of Informatics and the Rijeka Polytechnic.

The Students’ Fiumanka continues today with further qualifying and final races, after which the overall winners of this year’s regatta will be announced.
This increasingly popular student regatta is part of an effort to bring sailing closer to young people and to enable them, through personal experience, to become familiar with the sea, maritime tradition, and sailing skills.
The Students’ Fiumanka is organised by the University of Rijeka and Fiumanka, and today it stands as an important programme that connects the academic community with the largest sailing event in Kvarner, and arguably on the Croatian part of the Adriatic.
